Is Explora Journeys worth roughly $2,000 more per week for two people than Oceania Cruises? After sailing both, our answer is: it depends on how you vacation.
We genuinely love both lines. Oceania can deliver a wonderful luxury cruise at a lower price, while Explora offers larger entry-level accommodations and more inclusions. But there’s one detail we cannot stress enough: with Oceania, the specific ship you book makes a tremendous difference.
Key Takeaways
- Oceania’s ship classes deliver substantially different experiences, so choosing the individual vessel matters.
- Explora offers larger entry-level suites, broader beverage inclusions, streaming Wi-Fi and thermal spa access.
- Oceania generally costs less, while Explora accommodates families and delivers a more inclusive onboard experience.
Start With the Ship, Not Just the Cruise Line
Oceania isn’t one uniform experience. Its fleet spans several ship families, and choosing between them is a major part of choosing your cruise.
- R-class ships: These smaller, older ships carry roughly 700 guests. They have been refreshed, but their accommodations and overall feel differ considerably from newer vessels.
- Marina and Riviera: At about 1,250 guests, these offer larger staterooms and a different onboard experience. We’ve sailed Riviera.
- Vista and Allura: These bring a more contemporary design with a similar passenger count. Vista has been our favorite Oceania ship so far.
- Upcoming ships: Sonata builds on the newer-ship concept with more guests, while the announced transformation of Nautica into Aurelia is intended to create a more suite-focused experience with fewer than 500 guests.
Explora makes this decision simpler. Its fleet is being developed around a largely consistent, all-suite concept, with roughly 900 guests per ship. There are differences as the fleet expands, but you’re not choosing between dramatically different generations of ships.
Before booking Oceania, compare the individual vessels using its official ship information, rather than assuming every sailing delivers the same experience.
How Much Room Do You Get?
On Oceania’s R-class ships, a typical balcony stateroom is a little over 200 square feet. On Vista and Allura, entry-level veranda accommodations approach 300 square feet, with particularly beautiful bathrooms.
Explora’s entry-level Ocean Terrace Suites start at 377 square feet. That’s a meaningful difference if you enjoy spending time in your room rather than simply sleeping there.
You can move up to a penthouse on Oceania’s larger ships for additional space. Sometimes that upgrade still costs less than Explora, so compare actual categories and fares, not just the starting prices.
What’s Included, and Where Extras Appear
Both lines include substantially more than many contemporary cruise brands. Most dining, including specialty restaurants, is included, with some exceptions. Gratuities, specialty coffees, soft drinks, water and Wi-Fi are also included, along with laundry provisions.
The big differences are beverages, streaming connectivity and spa access.
Drinks: A Choice on Oceania, Broader Inclusion on Explora
Under the Oceania offer we compared, guests typically choose between beer and wine benefits or a shore excursion credit. If you don’t drink much, the excursion credit may be the better value.
The full beverage package was priced at $79.95 per person daily, with an upgrade of approximately $40 daily for those choosing the included beer and wine option. Those charges add up quickly for two people.
We often suggest doing the math before upgrading. Paying individually for occasional cocktails, especially with happy-hour pricing, can make more sense.
Explora includes a broader selection of wines, champagne, spirits, cocktails and in-suite beverages. Particularly elevated bottles can cost extra, but you don’t need the same package decision.
Wi-Fi and Thermal Spa Access
Oceania includes Wi-Fi, but streaming requires an additional charge under the offering we compared. Explora included multi-device streaming. We each connected four devices and experienced some of the best internet speeds we’ve had at sea.
Explora also includes thermal spa access. On Oceania, spa access depends on the ship, accommodation category and applicable fees.
Our first Explora sailing ended with a $0 onboard bill. That won’t happen for everyone, but it shows how comprehensive the inclusions can feel.
Food: Excellent on Both, but We Had a Favorite
Food is subjective, and Oceania’s dining is very good. Its specialty restaurants are a real strength, especially because most are included.
Still, we both preferred Explora overall.
The standout was Emporium Marketplace. Calling it a buffet doesn’t really capture the experience. It felt like a high-end food hall, with fresh-to-order dishes and an impressive seafood selection, including lobster tails and sushi during our sailing.
Oceania’s Terrace Café delivers quality, but Emporium was our favorite experience of that type at sea. We’d happily return to Explora for the food alone. That said, we don’t think dining should leave you disappointed on either line.
Adults-Only or Family-Friendly?
This may settle the decision before you compare another restaurant or suite.
Oceania’s adults-only policy applies to new bookings made starting in 2026. Previously booked children are accommodated under the earlier rules, so the transition does not mean every sailing immediately has no children.
Explora welcomes families and offers a kids’ club. We haven’t encountered huge numbers of children, but expect more during European summer holidays or Caribbean spring-break periods.
There are no waterslides, rides or arcades. This is not a floating theme park. Still, for a multigenerational vacation that includes children, Explora is the choice between these two.
Evenings and Overall Atmosphere
Neither line is the obvious pick for nonstop nightlife or large-scale entertainment. Both offer bars, music and performances, but the energy is more restrained than on big contemporary ships.
Explora felt more contemporary to us, with live music, DJ sets and quick bar service. We particularly enjoyed the evening top-deck sailaway gatherings: a lovely atmosphere without the feeling of a giant pool party.
Oceania leans more traditional, including in its music, with theatrical or Broadway-style entertainment depending on the sailing. Guest performers can make a difference on either line.
The Real Price Difference
We researched hundreds of sailings and calculated these average daily fares for two guests:
- Explora Journeys: $1,328 for an Ocean Terrace Suite.
- Oceania across its fleet: $972 for balcony accommodations.
- Oceania’s newer ships: $1,032 for balcony accommodations.
That puts Explora approximately $2,492 higher over seven nights compared with Oceania’s fleet-wide average, or $2,072 higher compared with its newer ships.
These are research averages, not matched quotes for identical itineraries. Dates, destinations, promotions, ships and room categories can change the comparison considerably.
Explora’s premium buys more space, broader drinks inclusion, streaming connectivity and thermal spa access. Whether that’s worthwhile depends on which benefits you’ll actually use. Solo travelers should also compare offers: we’ve found solo-supplement deals more often on Explora.
Which Would We Choose?
Choose Oceania when the itinerary is right, saving money matters, or an adults-only environment is a priority. Just make sure you understand the ship you’re booking. An older R-class vessel and Vista are not interchangeable experiences.
Choose Explora when time aboard is a major part of your vacation, you value spacious accommodations, and you’ll enjoy the included drinks, spa and dining. It’s also the option for families traveling with children.
Oceania already offers extensive worldwide itineraries, and Explora’s reach is expanding with its fleet. Start with where and when you want to travel, then compare the complete experience and total cost. Both can be excellent choices, just for different reasons.
