Cruise ships offer a unique way to explore Japan, allowing travelers to visit many cities and towns while only unpacking once. While Tokyo is a must-see, focusing solely on the capital means missing out on Japan’s diverse and rich experiences. We recently embarked on the Azamara Japan Intensive Cruise onboard the Azamara Journey, and it was truly unforgettable. Let’s dive into the fantastic amenities, dining options, cultural activities, and what you need to know if you’re considering a Japan-intensive cruise with Azamara.

BONUS: At the end, we highlight FIVE upcoming Japan-intensive cruises by Azamara, Princess and Holland America, so you can also enjoy what Japan has to offer!

Key Takeaways

  • Intimate Ship Experience: Azamara cruises typically host fewer than 700 passengers, offering a more personalized and relaxed atmosphere than larger ships.
  • Comprehensive Inclusions: Azamara includes most amenities such as meals, entertainment, gratuities, and even specialty dining with minimal fees.
  • Unique Cultural Experiences: Onboard cultural activities, local expert guidance, and destination-focused lectures enhance the cruise experience significantly.

The Azamara Japan Intensive Cruise: Azamara Journey

In April 2024, we embarked on a 15-night cruise with Azamara, highlighting Japan’s many wonders. We’ve done over forty cruises but this cruise stood out due to its smaller ship size. It accommodates fewer passengers, providing a more intimate and luxurious experience.  The ship featured flexible dining options, including specialty restaurants, and included beer and wine with meals.

A Typical Day on Azamara

One of the standout features of an Azamara cruise is the ease of getting on and off the ship, which is almost instantaneous due to the small number of passengers.  This is a stark contrast to the long lines typical on larger ships. The smaller size also allows the ship to dock in smaller, less-frequented ports, offering unique experiences and interactions with local cultures.

Onboard and Onshore Highlights

Azamara offers an array of onboard activities, including destination lectures, cultural shows, and deck parties. Onshore, the cruise balanced guided excursions with the freedom to explore independently. A Japanese ambassador onboard provided invaluable advice on where to eat and what to see in each port.

Ports of Call on Azamara Japan Intensive Cruise

Aomori

Our first stop was Aomori, where we visited the historic Hirosaki Castle and enjoyed local apple delicacies. A highlight was a performance by musicians playing the shamisen, a traditional three-string instrument.

Akita

In Akita, we sought out the famous Inaniwa Udon, a local specialty. Despite not seeing the renowned Akita dogs, the culinary experience was memorable.

Niigata

Niigata offered a unique experience with local students greeting and guiding us through the city. We enjoyed conveyor belt sushi in the famous fish market, as well as stunning cherry blossoms in local parks and along the river.

Hiroshima

A guided tour in Hiroshima included a visit to the Peace Memorial Park and Miyajima Island, home to the iconic Torii gate that appears to float in the bay. We also enjoyed a special okonomiyaki lunch, a local savory pancake cooked on the grill at our table.

Kobe

An overnight stay in Kobe allowed us to explore the city and indulge in a Kobe beef meal. The city also offered cultural performances and plenty of time to explore its vibrant districts. We enjoyed fireworks upon our departure.

Other Notable Stops

Other memorable stops included Takamatsu, known for its beautiful gardens and local udon, and Shimizu, where we enjoyed outdoor excursions and stunning views of Mount Fuji.

Special Onboard Experiences

Azamara’s small ship size allowed for unique onboard experiences, such as performances by local artists when docking and departing. One of the highlights was a fireworks display as we left one of the ports, creating a memorable farewell.
