We’ve taken almost fifty cruises over the years, but Azamara Cruises has become one of our favorite lines. What follows is our Azamara cruise review, which details what we love about the line (plus a few things we don’t like). We also offer tips to booking a cruise on Azamara and how to save some money in the process.

Azamara Cruise Ship

First Impressions and Unique Aspects of Azamara Cruises

When we first embarked on an Azamara cruise, we were immediately struck by the intimate and welcoming atmosphere, not only from the crew but also from fellow passengers. Having sailed (and enjoyed) some very large cruise ships in the past (2,000 – 5,000 passengers), the differences of sailing with just 600-700 passengers was eye opening

Unlike the colossal ships of other cruise lines, Azamara’s smaller vessels offer a more personalized and immersive experience. This unique aspect sets the tone for the entire journey, making it feel less like a crowded vacation and more like a semi-luxurious, bespoke experience.

The Itinerary-Intensive Experience

One of the standout features of Azamara Cruises is its itinerary-intensive experience.

Azamara focuses on providing longer stays, more overnights, and night tours in various ports. This approach allows us to explore each destination’s culture, history, and lifestyle more deeply.

For instance, during our Spain Intensive cruise, we had an overnight stay in Barcelona, which gave us ample time to explore the city’s vibrant nightlife as well as iconic landmarks like the Sagrada Familia and Park Güell. Other country-intensive itineraries we’ve done include the Japan-Intensive, the Ancient Routes cruise in the Mediterranean, and the Ireland-Intensive.

Small Ship Advantages

The advantages of sailing on a smaller ship cannot be overstated. Azamara’s ships, which typically carry around 700 guests, can access ports that larger ships simply cannot.

This means we get to visit hidden gems and less crowded destinations.

This included a memorable journey into Seville.  Due to the ship’s small size, it was able to sail right up the Guadalquivir River, pass through locks, and berth in the middle of Seville, rather than docking at Cádiz like all the larger ships have to do. It’s pretty much the only cruise ship size that can literally “park” in the middle of this incredible Spanish city – and walk off right into the heart of it all.

Additionally, the smaller ship size fosters a sense of community among passengers and crew, making interactions more meaningful and service more attentive. We can remember the crew members quickly learning our name and preferences, which added a personal touch to the experience.

Unique Onboard Experiences

Azamara also excels in offering unique onboard experiences that enhance the overall journey.

From the AzAmazing Evenings—exclusive, complimentary events that showcase the best of local culture—to the enrichment programs featuring expert lecturers and destination-focused activities, there’s always something engaging to do.

Among the AzAmazing Evenings we’ve enjoyed: a celebration of Korean culture during a stay in Busan, including traditional dancers and taekwondo fighters; and a visit to a theater in Seville to see a Carmen production show featuring flamenco dancers. These experiences entertain and deepen our connection to the places we visit.

Azamara also offers immersion performances. These could range from bringing local performers on board for a deck-top BBQ and dinner show to an impromptu performance of karate or a kimono wearing demonstration in the theater in Japan.

Whether you’re a seasoned cruiser or new to the world of cruising, Azamara offers a distinctive way to explore the world, one that prioritizes depth over breadth and quality over quantity.

The Inclusive Amenities of Azamara Cruises

One of the most appealing aspects of Azamara Cruises is their all-inclusive pricing.

This means that many of the costs typically associated with cruising are already covered in the fare. From gratuities and select beverages to self-service laundry and shuttle services in port cities, Azamara ensures that we can focus on enjoying our journey without constantly reaching for our wallets.

This level of inclusivity provides peace of mind and allows us to fully immerse ourselves in the experience.

While the nightly rate might appear higher than some mass-market cruises, when you consider everything that is included, the lack of constant upsells, and the smaller ship experience, the value starts to stack up.

Dining and Beverages

When it comes to dining options and quality, Azamara truly excels. The cruise line offers a variety of dining venues, each providing a unique culinary experience. Whether we’re in the mood for a casual meal at the Windows Café, a fine dining experience at Aqualina, or a perfectly cooked steak at Prime C, there’s something to satisfy every palate.

The quality of the food is consistently high, with menus that feature fresh, locally sourced ingredients and dishes inspired by the destinations we visit. We particularly enjoyed the themed nights, where the cuisine reflected the culture of the port we were docked in, adding an extra layer of authenticity to our dining experience.

Would we say this has been our best dining at sea? That is a hard call and very subjective. However, it certainly would fall in the top 25% of our nearly 50 cruises. If we could critique anything, it would be that while the dining is delicious and consistent, there’s less of a “wow” factor in the standout dishes we sometimes experience elsewhere.

Azamara’s beverage packages further enhance the all-inclusive experience. The standard package includes a selection of wines, spirits, beers, and non-alcoholic beverages, ensuring we have plenty of options without any additional cost.

Upgraded packages are available for those who prefer premium selections. We’re not sure the upgrade is worth it. The “Premium” package offers very little for the added expense.

Perhaps the Ultimate package makes more sense if you want everything at no charge, but you have to likely be an aggressive drinker to make it worthwhile.   We’re not sure it’s necessary, given what is already included.

Azamara Cruises’ inclusive amenities significantly enhance the overall travel experience. By covering many of the extras that other cruise lines charge for, Azamara allows us to enjoy a more relaxed and immersive journey. The high-quality dining options and comprehensive beverage packages ensure that our culinary experiences are as memorable as the destinations we visit.

These thoughtful inclusions make Azamara an excellent choice for travelers seeking a hassle-free and enriching cruise experience.

Considerations Before Booking an Azamara Cruise

While Azamara Cruises offers a unique and enriching experience, there are some potential drawbacks to consider before booking.

Older Ships

One of the main points to keep in mind is that Azamara’s ships are not brand new. These vessels, originally put into service around 20-25 years ago, have been refurbished to maintain a modern and comfortable ambiance. However, they may lack some of the latest technological advancements found on newer ships. For instance, while the ships are equipped with Starlink Internet, the speeds are capped, which might be a limitation if you need to work onboard or stream videos extensively.

Higher Price Point

Another consideration is the price point. Azamara cruises are priced higher than mainstream cruise lines like Royal Caribbean or Princess. However, it’s essential to remember that many amenities are included in the fare, such as gratuities, select beverages, and shuttle services. This inclusivity can offset the higher upfront cost, but weighing this against your budget and preferences is crucial.

Not Suitable for Children

There may be better choices for families with young children than Azamara. The cruise line’s focus on destination immersion and cultural experiences means fewer activities specifically designed for kids. During our cruises, we rarely saw children onboard, and the atmosphere is generally more suited to adults and older travelers.

Suppose you’re planning a family vacation with young kids. In that case, consider other cruise lines that offer more family-friendly amenities and programs.

Passenger Age Skews Older

Azamara tends to attract a slightly older demographic in terms of suitability for different age groups. Most passengers are in their 50s to 70s, well-traveled, and interested in the cultural and historical aspects of the destinations.

If you’re in your 20s or 30s and looking for a lively, party-centric cruise, Azamara might not be the right fit.

However, suppose you’re passionate about exploring new places and enjoying a more relaxed and sophisticated atmosphere.  In that case, Azamara is likely an excellent choice.

Despite these considerations, Azamara Cruises offers a unique and enriching travel experience that can be incredibly rewarding. By understanding the potential drawbacks and assessing your preferences and needs, you can make an informed decision about whether Azamara is the right cruise line for you. The inclusive amenities, immersive itineraries, and intimate onboard atmosphere make it a standout option for those seeking a more personalized and culturally rich journey.

Practical Tips for Booking and Saving on Azamara Cruises

When it comes to booking an Azamara cruise, several strategies can help you get the best value for your money.

Book Early

One effective approach is to book well in advance. Azamara often offers early booking discounts and promotions that can significantly reduce the overall cost of your cruise. Additionally, booking early ensures that you have a wider selection of staterooms, allowing you to secure the perfect accommodation for your needs.

Consider Bidding on an Upgrade

Another tip is to take advantage of upgrade bidding. Azamara has a program that allows you to bid for stateroom upgrades after you’ve booked your cruise. This can be a cost-effective way to enjoy a more luxurious experience without paying the full price of a higher-category stateroom.

Keep an eye on your email for upgrade offers, and be prepared to place a bid if you’re interested in moving up to a suite or a stateroom with a better view.

Plan Shore Excursions Carefully

When planning your shore excursions, consider exploring alternative tours to the cruise line’s offerings.   While Azamara’s excursions are well-curated and provide excellent experiences, they can be pricey.

Researching and booking independent tours or exploring on your own can save you money and offer a more personalized experience. Websites like Viator and TripAdvisor are great resources for finding reputable tour operators in your destination ports.

Join Azamara Circle Loyalty Program

Additionally, joining Azamara’s loyalty program, Azamara Circle, can provide valuable benefits and savings. Members receive perks such as onboard credits, complimentary internet minutes, and exclusive events. The more you sail with Azamara, the more rewards you accumulate, enhancing your overall cruise experience.

Book Onboard for Bigger Savings

You’ll also save at least 5% by booking your next journey onboard, enjoy lower deposit rates, and typically receive more onboard credit ($200 – $300) that you can stack on top of every other offer.

Travel Off Peak

Finally, consider traveling during the shoulder seasons—just before and after the peak travel times. Cruises during these times are often less expensive, and you’ll enjoy fewer crowds both onboard and in port cities.

Plus, the weather is usually still pleasant, making it an ideal time to explore new destinations.

By implementing these practical tips, you can maximize your savings and enjoy a more rewarding Azamara cruise experience. Whether you book early, bid for upgrades, or explore independent shore excursions, these strategies will help you get the most out of your journey without breaking the bank.

Leverage Cruise-Only Travel Agents for Onboard Credits

Using a travel agent can be a game-changer when booking your Azamara cruise. Many travel agents have access to exclusive deals and can offer additional onboard credits as part of your booking package. These credits can be used for a variety of onboard expenses, such as specialty dining, spa treatments, or even shore excursions.  By working with a knowledgeable travel agent, you can unlock these extra perks and enhance your cruise experience without spending more.

Understanding Azamara’s Loyalty Program

Azamara’s loyalty program is designed to reward repeat cruisers with a range of benefits.

As a member, you can enjoy perks such as complimentary internet minutes or – even better – a significant discount on a full cruise plan, onboard credits, and exclusive events.  The program has multiple tiers; the more you sail with Azamara, the more rewards you accumulate. For instance, higher-tier members receive additional discounts on future cruises, priority boarding, and even complimentary laundry services. Understanding and taking full advantage of these benefits can significantly enhance your cruise experience.

You can even earn FREE CRUISE days, which is a fantastic perk.

Booking Onboard for Additional Savings

Another savvy strategy is to book your next Azamara cruise while you’re still onboard. Azamara often offers special promotions and discounts for guests who book their next cruise during their current voyage. These onboard booking deals can include reduced deposits, additional onboard credits, and exclusive discounts.

From 5% to 7%, immediate discounts are available.

Azamara also, at times, offers you the ability to make your final payment early, sometimes for up to 5% of additional onboard credit.  Quite valuable.

Not only does this allow you to lock in a great rate for your next adventure, but it also provides you with extra perks to enjoy on your current cruise.

Whether you leverage travel agents, understand the loyalty program, or book onboard for additional savings, these strategies will help you get the most out of your journey. Embrace these tips and enjoy a more rewarding and luxurious cruise with Azamara.

Comparing Costs with Traditional Cruises

At first glance, Azamara cruises might seem more expensive than traditional cruise lines. However, when you break down the costs, you’ll find that Azamara offers exceptional value.

Traditional cruises often have numerous hidden costs, such as specialty dining, beverages, and gratuities. On the other hand, Azamara includes many of these amenities in the upfront price.

For example, Azamara’s fares typically cover gratuities, select beverages, and, many times, free shuttles into town.

This all-inclusive approach can make a significant difference in the overall cost of your trip.

Utilizing Cruise Search Tools

To find the best deals on Azamara cruises, it’s essential to utilize cruise search tools effectively.  Websites like Cruise Critic, Expedia, and even Azamara’s own site offer search filters that can help you find cruises within your budget.

We highly recommend Cruiseplum.com.

Look for promotions, last-minute deals, and package offers that bundle airfare or pre-cruise hotel stays. These tools can help you uncover hidden gems and make your luxury cruise more affordable.

By understanding the actual value of what Azamara offers and using the right tools to find the best deals, you can enjoy a luxurious cruise experience without breaking the bank.  Whether it’s through the all-inclusive pricing, the unique small ship experience, or savvy use of cruise search tools, Azamara makes affordable luxury a reality.  Embrace these strategies and set sail on a journey that combines elegance and value in perfect harmony.

Practical Advice for First-Time Azamara Cruisers

Preparing for Your First Cruise

Preparation is key to a smooth and enjoyable cruise experience. Start by familiarizing yourself with Azamara’s check-in process and required documentation. Ensure you have all necessary travel documents, such as passports and visas, well in advance. Packing smartly is also crucial. Azamara cruises often have a country club casual dress code, so pack accordingly.

Remember essentials like sunscreen, comfortable walking shoes for shore excursions, and any medications you may need.

Making the Most of Onboard Amenities

Azamara ships are known for their comfortable amenities and intimate atmosphere.

To fully enjoy your time onboard, take advantage of the various facilities and services available. Start your day with a visit to the fitness center or join a yoga class to stay active. Indulge in a relaxing spa treatment or unwind in the pool area.

Dining is a highlight on Azamara cruises, with two specialty restaurants offering gourmet cuisine. Make reservations early to secure your preferred dining times.

They will, at times, offer a dining package that gives you significant discounts if you book specialty restaurants 3 times.  You’ll need to repeat one restaurant.

They also have a Chefs Table meal for a higher price.

Don’t miss out on the enrichment programs, which include lectures, cooking demonstrations, and wine tastings.  These activities provide a deeper understanding of the destinations you’ll visit and enhance your overall cruise experience.

Tips for Shore Excursions

Shore excursions are a fantastic way to explore the unique destinations on your itinerary. Azamara offers a range of excursions tailored to different interests, from cultural tours to adventurous activities.

To make the most of your shore excursions:

  1. Research the ports of call in advance and choose excursions that align with your interests.
  2. Book popular excursions early, as they can fill up quickly. If you prefer exploring on your own, Azamara’s smaller ships often dock closer to city centers, making it easy to venture out independently.
  3. Don’t forget to bring a small daypack with essentials like water, snacks, and a camera to capture the memories.
