Christmas and New Years in Bangkok is a vibrant and festive affair, and elaborate lights and massive decorations fill the streets, giant malls, shops, transit stations and other public spaces. But this year we’ve noticed so many hippos around town, we wondered if 2025 was Year of the Hippopotamus. However, it is not. The city is simply paying homage to a viral water horse that has consumed social media since July.

The lucky people of Thailand’s capital got a hippopotamus for Christmas. This year’s theme of the Bangkok Illumination Festival 2024, which runs from December 17, 2024 through January 5, 2025, is “Moo Deng Buk Krung” (The Bouncing Pig Takes Over the Capital”). Moo Deng, the famous Thai hippopotamus, is the star of the holiday celebrations in Bangkok and appears in lavish installations around the city.

Illuminated hippos abound

Who is Moo Deng?

Moo Deng is a pygmy hippopotamus who was born at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi (about two hours from Bangkok) in July 2024 and became an instant global social media success (as well as a persistent meme). As a testament to her solid position in popular culture, the young, diminutive hippo was even referenced in a controversial skit on SNL.
