Exotic destinations beckon to the avid traveler with the promise of immersive and authentic experiences.

As we head into 2025, global exploration continues to evolve, with emerging destinations and reimagined classics reshaping the travel landscape. For seasoned travelers, this upcoming year promises an exciting blend of comfort, adventure, and value.

Whether you’re planning a cruise through pristine waters or seeking cultural immersion in far-flung corners of the world, 2025 top destinations and travel trends offer something for every discerning explorer.

The Hottest Destinations for 2025

Rising Stars in Asia

Japan’s Setouchi Region has emerged as 2025’s must-visit destination, with its art islands, traditional culture, and newly launched luxury ferry services connecting the archipelago. The region’s blend of contemporary art installations and ancient temples provides the perfect balance of modern and traditional Japan that sophisticated travelers seek.

We’ve had amazing trips to Japan. We’ve cruised there once, have another planned in 2025, and also explored multiple times by land (air, train). A trip to Japan is always a top idea for any year.

South Korea’s Jeju Island has transformed into a wellness destination, combining traditional Korean spa culture with cutting-edge health technologies. New luxury wellness resorts offer innovative treatments alongside spectacular volcanic landscapes.

We’ve only been to South Korea once (Busan), but that was enough to prove we need to return! It is in our plans over the next couple of years.

Vietnam’s Central Highlands have gained prominence, particularly Dalat and its surrounding areas. New luxury mountain resorts offer respite from the tropical heat while providing access to coffee plantations, waterfalls, and French colonial architecture.

Vietnam is another region we’ve been to, yet have hardly scratched the surface. Isn’t that one of the greatest parts of travel? You can visit a country, but can return again and again and have a completely different experience.

Bhutan’s newly opened eastern regions provide an authentic glimpse into the last Himalayan kingdom, with luxury lodges now offering access to previously remote monasteries and valleys.

European Gems

Portugal’s Alentejo region has become the thinking traveler’s alternative to the Algarve. With its ancient Roman ruins, medieval towns, and emerging wine estates, it offers authenticity increasingly rare in modern Europe. New luxury rural hotels have transformed former monasteries and farms into sophisticated retreats. It’s also a haven for foodies.

Portugal remains an all-time favorite for us. Whether it is exploring Lisbon (try to avoid peak tourist season however – yikes), Porto in the north or the incredible Algarve region (rent a car and explore!), you will have an amazing time.

Slovenia’s Julian Alps have emerged as Europe’s new adventure luxury destination, with boutique mountain lodges offering access to pristine nature alongside world-class cuisine.

Georgia’s wine region, Kakheti, has captured the attention of cultural travelers with its 8,000-year-old wine-making traditions. Luxury properties have opened in restored castles, offering wine-focused experiences alongside cultural immersion in this fascinating region between Europe and Asia.

We had an amazing trip to Georgia back in 2022. While we couldn’t see the whole country during our visit, we saw enough to know that it is one of our most frequently recommended. The food there is rich and delicious.

Georgian beer and khinkali

Scotland’s Orkney Islands have gained recognition for their Neolithic sites and emerging food scene, with new luxury eco-lodges providing bases for exploration.

Our exploration of Scotland recently included an Azamara cruise, and in the past we booked an in-depth exploration through Kensington Tours. Do not miss Edinburgh! We also recommend Inverness, Glasgow and the Scottish Highlands.

Emerging African Destinations

Namibia’s Skeleton Coast has seen significant development in sustainable luxury tourism. New fly-in safari camps offer unprecedented access to this remote coastline, where desert meets ocean. The combination of desert-adapted wildlife and shipwreck tours creates an utterly unique safari experience.

Safari is an all-time favorite of ours. We’ve now returned twice to Africa (Tanzania, South Africa and Zimbabwe), but this is the type of trip you can do on repeat. And we personally have yet to get to Namibia. You can actually get there by cruise ship. Several times we nearly booked cruises on Azamara and other cruise lines who have overnight stops in Namibia.

Leopard in South Africa

Mozambique’s Quirimbas Archipelago has established itself as the Indian Ocean’s next luxury destination, with private island resorts offering unspoiled marine experiences. Perhaps the closest we’ve come to this type of experience was our trip to the Maldives.

Rwanda has expanded beyond gorilla trekking, with Akagera National Park emerging as a luxury safari destination. The reintroduction of black rhinos has made it a “Big Five” reserve, while new lodges offer levels of luxury previously unseen in East Africa.

Certainly more on the adventurous and exotic, as it does take some effort to get deep into the jungle it certainly might be the bucket list experience in 2025 or 2026.

Zimbabwe’s Gonarezhou National Park has become a conservation success story, with new luxury camps offering intimate wildlife experiences away from crowds. If you go to Zimbabwe, however, do not miss Victoria Falls.

The Americas’ Hidden Gems

Colombia’s Pacific Coast has emerged as an eco-luxury destination, with new lodges offering whale watching and pristine rainforest experiences.

Chile’s Atacama Desert has seen a boom in astronomy tourism, with luxury lodges offering private observatories and expert-guided stargazing.

Brazil’s Pantanal has gained recognition as the premier destination for jaguar watching, with new luxury river cruises offering unprecedented access to wildlife.

Mexico’s Copper Canyon has newly accessible areas thanks to luxury train journeys and boutique mountain lodges.

Cruise Destinations Making Waves

The Saudi Red Sea project has opened its waters to luxury cruises, offering unprecedented access to pristine coral reefs and historic coastal sites. Several cruise lines now include stops at the ancient city of Al-‘Ula and the futuristic Neom development.

The Indonesian archipelago has seen a surge in small-ship luxury cruising, particularly in the lesser-known eastern regions. Expedition cruises now explore remote Raja Ampat, the Spice Islands, and Komodo National Park with unprecedented comfort.

The Northwest Passage has become more accessible with purpose-built expedition ships offering luxury Arctic crossings with expert lectures and helicopter excursions.

The Maldives has introduced inter-atoll cruise experiences, combining traditional luxury resort stays with small-ship exploration of remote islands.

The Maldive Islands

Oceania’s New Frontiers

Tasmania’s West Coast has emerged as Australia’s next frontier for luxury wilderness experiences, with new lodges offering access to pristine temperate rainforests.

New Zealand’s Stewart Island has gained recognition for its dark sky sanctuary status, with new luxury eco-lodges offering kiwi-spotting and stargazing experiences.

Papua New Guinea’s Sepik River now offers luxury river cruises, providing comfortable access to one of the world’s most fascinating cultural regions.

The Solomon Islands have developed sustainable luxury diving experiences, with new eco-resorts offering access to pristine coral reefs and WWII wreck sites.

It is one big world out there. Our suggestion? Book the next one. And the next one. Never stop exploring.
