Viking Ocean Cruises: Finally Worth The High Price Tag? Our Viking Vela Cruise Review

Short answer: After sailing aboard Viking Vela, the premium price felt justified. The ships keep their sleek Scandinavian design and cozy atmosphere while improving the things that matter most: dining, service, and small thoughtful touches. If you value calm, well‑run itineraries and lots included up front, Viking now stacks up as a strong luxury‑contemporary option.

What we paid and what you actually get

We spent about $5,800 for a weeklong Mediterranean cruise (Barcelona to Rome). That price covered most of the obvious extras: high‑quality Wi‑Fi, drinks, one shore excursion per port, specialty restaurants, and many onboard amenities. Gratuities were not included.

That level of inclusion changes the math. Viking sits above typical contemporary lines on price, but a lot of the usual add‑ons are baked into the fare.

Who Viking is—and who it is not

Viking leans into a calm, minimalist Scandinavian aesthetic. Expect cozy public spaces with blankets, warm corners, and a quiet, organized vibe. It never felt crowded.

This is not the line for big production shows, late‑night party scenes, or nonstop organized activities. If you want a relaxed, enrichment‑focused cruise with everything taken care of for you, Viking is aligned with that. If you want Broadway‑style productions, late‑night parties, or constant activities, look elsewhere.

Dining: a standout improvement

Dining was one of the biggest surprises. The main dining room, World Cafe buffet, and specialty venues were consistently strong—good enough that the buffet replicated sit‑down quality on many nights.

  • World Cafe: Fresh choices, an impressive seafood and sushi presentation, and nightly offerings that made the buffet feel elevated.
  • Specialty restaurants: The rotating Chef’s Table menus are included and change by sailing (we experienced a Chinese menu; other sailings feature California or seafood themes). Manfredi’s Italian is also included and excellent for fresh pastas.
  • Mamsen’s / Explorer’s Lounge: Great spot for breakfast, brunch, snacks, waffles and cinnamon rolls that stood out as ship favorites.

One operational note: peak dinner times (around 7:15 p.m.) can get busy. Viking does not take table reservations in the usual way, so avoiding the busiest hour or heading to the World Cafe can eliminate waits.

Service and the crew

Service felt genuine and consistently excellent. The crew were friendly, attentive, and never felt like they were forcing smiles. For us, that authenticity elevated the entire onboard experience.

Staterooms and Comfort Club

We were upgraded to a penthouse veranda late, though the difference from a deluxe veranda is modest. The state room scored well for layout, storage, and a spacious bathroom with heated floors—very cozy for winter sailings.

The only minor complaint was the bedding. The mattress and top layers felt firmer and lighter than what we’ve enjoyed on some other premium lines. Overall stateroom score: 4/5.

Spa, fitness and fair pricing

Spot pricing for onboard services has gone crazy across the industry, but Viking’s spa pricing felt reasonable by comparison. A 50‑minute massage for about $149 (gratuity included) and an 80‑minute option near $199 were fair relative to other lines charging far more for shorter treatments.

The fitness center is spacious and split into areas for cardio, weights, and specialty machines. It was almost never busy during our sailing.

Booking spa treatments through the ship app was straightforward—select the exact time you want—which is a much better process than waiting at a spa desk for openings.

Wi‑Fi and tech: included but limited

Wi‑Fi is included, and raw speed was strong (often in four‑star territory). The policy is the sticking point: the network initially warns that streaming is not allowed and there’s no official streaming package to buy. Despite the policy, streaming worked for us on the newer ship, but the hardline “no streaming” stance feels outdated for 2026.

Score for Wi‑Fi and tech: 3/5 until Viking opens official streaming options or relaxes the policy.

Entertainment and enrichment

Entertainment is understated. Expect evening music, smaller song‑and‑dance numbers, and delightful daytime performers like violinists in the atrium. If you want big production shows, this is not the right fit.

Viking’s enrichment programming and destination lectures are a core strength, though the topics vary by sailing—some speakers will resonate more than others. Walking tours included with the fare are a real plus; they offer a concise introduction to a destination before you explore on your own.

Small details that add up

Little things matter: bottomless pots of coffee in the World Cafe, a tasteful barbecue night in the Winter Garden, and consistently good espresso options. Those touches created a relaxed, comfortable rhythm to the days onboard.

How to save on a Viking Ocean cruise

  • Book early: Viking rarely runs huge last‑minute sales. Early booking locks better pricing and choice.
  • Use loyalty credits: Returning guests often receive loyalty discounts (commonly around $200).
  • Book on board: Onboard booking specials can be worthwhile.
  • Work with a travel advisor: Advisors frequently have access to onboard credit and promotions that can cover gratuities or spa treatments.
  • Be flexible with dates: Moving a sailing by one or two weeks can reduce fares by 10–20 percent without major weather tradeoffs.
  • Choose cabin wisely: Upselling to premium cabins has perks, but consider whether those extras are worth the price for your needs.
  • Mark key release dates: Shore excursions and specialty dining slots open on a set day—booking in the first hours increases your chances of getting priority times.

Would we sail Viking again?

Yes. After multiple Viking ocean cruises, this was our best yet. It made us consider longer, more unique itineraries like a transatlantic or more exotic routes. For travelers who value calm ships, excellent food, genuine service, and smart inclusions, Viking is now easy to recommend.

Frequently asked questions

Is Viking Ocean worth the higher price compared to other cruise lines?

If your priorities are calm ships, high‑quality included dining, good service, and thoughtful inclusions (Wi‑Fi, drinks, one shore excursion per port), Viking’s higher price begins to make sense. For party seekers or big show fans, lower‑cost lines may offer better value.

What exactly is included in the fare?

Typical inclusions on Viking Ocean: Wi‑Fi, many beverages, one shore excursion per port, specialty dining, and most onboard enrichment. Gratuities are usually extra unless covered through a promotion.

Can you stream Netflix or Zoom on Viking Wi‑Fi?

Officially the Wi‑Fi policy discourages streaming and there is no separate streaming package to purchase. Practically, we streamed without issue on a newer ship, but until Viking relaxes the policy or offers an upgraded package, streaming cannot be guaranteed.

Are specialty restaurants and excursions really included?

Yes. Specialty restaurants like the Chef’s Table rotation and Manfredi’s are included. Viking also includes one shore excursion per port, which provides a solid baseline for exploring destinations.

How can I get the best deal on Viking?

Book early, be flexible with dates, use a travel advisor to access onboard credits, check for onboard booking specials, and take advantage of loyalty discounts if you’re a returning guest.

Is Viking a good line for winter sailings?

Yes. Viking’s cozy design, heated cabin features, and calm indoor spaces make winter Mediterranean itineraries comfortable and enjoyable.
